Helen was born and raised in Honoraville, Crenshaw County, Alabama. Living in the country taught her to love nature at a very young age. She got to know and love all the flowers in the yards of her family and that joy is still very much part of her life. She thoroughly enjoys growing flowers and finds that painting them enhances her favorite memories, fulfilling the desire to be close to nature. As an art teacher, Helen believes she should be able to paint most any subject, and therefore her paintings include flowers, landscapes, seascapes, snow scenes, animals, portraits and still lifes.

Edward Cochran, a graduate of the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, was Helen’s first art teacher. Helen studied under Mr. Cochran for eight years. She has also attended painting workshops including “Painting in the Mountains” in Burnsville and Montreat, North Carolina. Her work has been exhibited throughout Florida and in North Carolina and is represented in many private collections. Helen is the first to tell us that she continues to learn through teaching and from nature - every day.

As an art teacher, Helen’s experience began with a group of fifteen students at her home in Palatka, Florida, where she taught for five years. In 1986 Helen and Porter moved to the Hall Farm in NC and began teaching shortly thereafter upon total renovation of a rather large tractor shed in the midst of arbors and gardens. This beautiful setting soon became appropriately and fondly referred to as “the Garden House.” Helen and Porter’s natural love for nature and life in the mountains led them also into other creative directions and they have both taught workshops on such things as “soap making,” “growing and decorating gourds,” “plant swaps,” and much more.

Helen is thankful for her God-given talents and feels it important to share her knowledge and abilities with others.
