Sally Mass and her husband Jerry first discovered the mountains of Western Carolina on their honeymoon in 1976. It was here they chose to vacation for years, and along with their two children Cheryl and Matthew the family found the peaceful rural setting rich in happy memories, prompting an eventual move to Franklin in 1998.
Sally always enjoyed art as a child, and remembers her mom “dabbling” in both oil paints and pastels, trying her own hand at it a bit. But it wasn’t until meeting Helen Lambert at Helen and Porter’s “Garden House Christmas Party” that timing and opportunity joined together providing just the right outlet for Sally to pursue her more creative side. Observing the quaint décor and obvious talents of Helen excited Sally from that moment and she has been “hooked” ever since.
Besides her appreciation of Helen’s teaching prowess and gentle encouragement, Sally sites as her inspiration “the very Creation of God.” “After all”, she remembers Jerry once stating early in their relationship, “The best we can ever do is to copy what He has already perfectly Created.” It has become a passion to capture nature on canvas, most particularly flowers, water and landscapes.
